AT&T and its subsidiaries furnish domestic and international long distance, regional, local and wireless communications services, cable television and Internet communications services. AT&T also provides billing, directory, and calling card services to support its communications business.
As the category name implies, the commercial ventures in this group handle a multitude of long distance calls. There is a difference between long distance and local long distance calls. Local long distance calls are typically those calls that end within the same area code and sometimes the same state as the person making the call and are automatically handled (unless requested otherwise) by the consumer's local phone company. Long distance, on the other hand, are typically calls that end anywhere outside of either the caller's area code or state and are obviously handled by the long distance carrier chosen by the residential line owner. Many long distance carriers also offer such services as toll-free numbers, prepaid and normal calling cards, as well as Internet access to residential and business customers.
